AI SEO for Shopify: How to Get Your Products Recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot

Shopify growth

By Amir Akhlaq · Updated

Short answer: AI search tools pick products from two places: structured product data (your catalog and feeds) and what the wider web says about you (your pages, reviews and mentions). To get recommended, make your Shopify product data complete and consistent, publish pages that answer buyer questions directly, and earn reviews and mentions on sites AI tools read.

Your Shopify store is probably already "in" ChatGPT

In 2026 Shopify started sending eligible stores' catalogs to AI shopping tools. Through Shopify Catalog and its Agentic Storefronts sales channel, products can appear in ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity, and each channel can be switched on or off in the Shopify admin.

OpenAI's own help pages confirm that Shopify product data reaches ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog, with no extra work needed from individual merchants.

That's the good news. The catch is that being in the catalog doesn't mean being recommended. Thousands of stores sell magnesium, serums or dog treats. The AI decides which few to show, and that's where AI SEO comes in.

How AI tools decide which products to recommend

OpenAI says ChatGPT's product results are chosen independently and are not ads. When it picks what to show, it looks at:

  • The shopper's question and context: budget, needs and, when memory is on, their past preferences.
  • Structured product data such as price, description, availability and variants, from merchants and third-party providers.
  • Reviews from public websites, which it summarizes into likes and dislikes.
  • The merchant itself: when several stores sell the same item, it ranks them by availability, price, quality, and whether the merchant is the maker or main seller.

Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity work in a similar way: clear product data plus trusted information from around the web.

7 steps to get your Shopify products recommended

1. Turn on the AI channels

In your Shopify admin, check the sales channels for ChatGPT, Copilot, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity, and make sure the ones you want are on. If a product is ineligible for the catalog, it's effectively invisible in those channels.

2. Make product data complete and specific

AI tools match products to questions like "a fragrance-free moisturizer for sensitive skin under $30". Fill in every field: product type, size or count, ingredients or materials, who it's for, variants, GTINs and price. Vague titles like "Glow Serum" lose to "Vitamin C Serum for Dull Skin, 30 ml".

3. Write product pages that answer questions

Add a short, plain-language section to each product page: who it's for, how to use it, what makes it different, and an FAQ. Lead with the answer in one or two sentences. That's what AI tools quote.

4. Add structured data

Make sure your theme outputs Product schema with price, availability, brand and review ratings, plus FAQ schema where you have FAQs. It helps both Google and AI crawlers read your pages correctly.

5. Keep your brand facts consistent everywhere

Your brand name, product names, prices and claims should match on Shopify, Amazon, social profiles and retailer listings. Conflicting information makes AI tools less confident about recommending you.

6. Earn reviews and mentions on trusted sites

Because ChatGPT summarizes reviews from public websites, review volume and quality matter. So do mentions in "best of" lists, creator content, Reddit threads and press. AI tools trust what other people say about you more than what you say about yourself.

7. Track where you show up

Each month, ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the questions your customers ask, such as "best collagen powder for joints". Note whether you appear, who appears instead, and which sources they cite. Then fix the gaps.

AI SEO vs. traditional SEO

Traditional SEO still matters, because AI tools read the same pages Google ranks. AI SEO adds three things on top: complete product feeds, answer-first content that's easy to quote, and a reputation spread across many sites rather than just your own.

Where to start

If you only do three things this month: switch on the AI sales channels, rewrite your top five product titles and descriptions so they're specific, and add an FAQ to each of those pages. Then check ChatGPT again in a few weeks.

Questions

What is AI SEO for Shopify?

AI SEO is the work of getting your products named and recommended inside AI answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity, not only ranked in Google's blue links.

Are Shopify products already in ChatGPT?

Yes, for eligible stores. OpenAI says Shopify product data reaches ChatGPT through Shopify Catalog with no extra work from each merchant. Being included is not the same as being recommended, though.

Can I pay to be recommended by ChatGPT?

No. OpenAI states that ChatGPT's product results are selected independently and are not ads. Ads in ChatGPT are shown separately from product results.

How long does AI SEO take to work?

Feed and product-data fixes can show up within weeks. Building the reviews, mentions and content that AI tools trust usually takes three to six months.
