Short answer: Amazon retired the standalone Rufus assistant on May 13, 2026 and replaced it with Alexa for Shopping. The way it picks products hasn't changed much: it reads your listing as a set of claims, checks them against reviews and Q&A, and recommends products that clearly answer the shopper's question.
What changed
- The name and the surface. Rufus is now Alexa for Shopping, the default AI shopping layer for signed-in US customers. No Prime membership or Echo device is needed.
- More personalization. It combines Rufus's product knowledge with Alexa+'s knowledge of the shopper.
What didn't change
- It matches intent, not exact keywords, through Amazon's COSMO knowledge layer.
- It trusts specific, verifiable claims more than keyword lists.
- It cross-checks what your listing says against what reviews say.
How to rewrite your listing for it
- List the questions buyers ask in your category: "Is it safe for kids?", "Does it leave a white cast?", "How long does one bottle last?"
- Answer each one in a bullet as a concrete claim: amounts, materials, certifications, use cases.
- Repeat key claims in A+ content and image text, so the assistant sees them more than once.
- Fix the gaps reviews reveal. If reviews contradict a claim, change the product or the claim.
- Test it. Ask the assistant your buyers' questions and see whether your product comes up.
