Short answer: Profitable Meta ads for CPG brands come down to four things: accurate tracking (Pixel plus Conversions API), a simple campaign structure, a steady flow of new creative, and judging results on profit and blended MER rather than in-platform ROAS alone.
1. Get tracking right first
Meta's algorithm optimizes on the purchase data you send it. If that data is incomplete, it learns from the wrong signals.
- Install Meta's sales channel in Shopify and connect your Pixel.
- Turn on the Conversions API (server-side tracking) through the Shopify integration, at the highest data-sharing setting available to you.
- Verify your domain in Meta Business Manager and set up your top events.
- Check Events Manager for a good match-quality score and no duplicate purchases.
2. Know your numbers before you spend
The right target depends on your margin, not on a "good ROAS" from a blog post.
- Break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ gross margin (after product, shipping and payment fees). A 60% margin means break-even ROAS is about 1.67.
- MER (marketing efficiency ratio) = total revenue ÷ total ad spend across all channels. It shows whether ads are growing the whole business.
- New-customer CAC compared with first-order profit and expected repeat purchases. Consumables like supplements and skincare can afford a higher CAC because customers reorder.

3. Keep the campaign structure simple
Over-split accounts starve each ad set of data. A simple structure works for most CPG brands:
- Prospecting: one broad campaign (or Advantage+ shopping campaign) where most of the budget goes.
- Testing: a separate campaign with a smaller budget to test new creative each week. Winners graduate to prospecting.
- Retargeting: a small budget for site visitors and cart abandoners, if it's still incremental in your account.
4. Creative is the real targeting
With broad targeting, the ad itself decides who sees it. For CPG products, the formats that tend to work best are:
- UGC and creator videos that show the product in real use
- Problem → solution hooks in the first two seconds
- Before and after, or comparison, where your category's ad policies allow it
- Review and testimonial statics with real customer quotes
- Founder stories that explain why the product exists
Test new concepts every week, not just new colors of the same ad. Ad fatigue is the most common reason good accounts slow down.
5. Make the landing page match the ad
Sending every ad to the homepage wastes clicks. Send each ad to the product page or a landing page that continues the same promise, shows reviews above the fold, and offers bundles or subscribe-and-save to lift order value.
6. Scale carefully
- Raise budgets on winning campaigns gradually rather than doubling overnight.
- Scale on profit and MER, not on a single good day.
- Add new creative before old ads fatigue, so performance doesn't drop when you scale.
7. Connect Meta to the rest of your channels
Meta ads often lift sales on Amazon and in-store as well as on Shopify. Look at total sales across channels when you judge results, and consider Amazon Attribution or a dedicated Amazon landing page if a big share of your buyers prefer Amazon.
