Short answer: AEO, or answer engine optimization, is the practice of writing and structuring content so that search engines and AI tools can quote it as the direct answer to a question. It's how your content ends up in featured snippets, "People also ask" boxes, voice answers and AI summaries.
Why AEO matters now
More and more searches end with an answer, not a click on ten blue links. Google shows AI Overviews and featured snippets, voice assistants read out a single answer, and tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity write a response and cite a few sources.
If your content is the clearest answer, you're the one quoted. If it isn't, a competitor's is.
AEO vs. SEO vs. GEO
- SEO gets a page ranking in search results.
- AEO gets a specific answer from that page lifted and shown as the answer.
- GEO (AI SEO) gets your brand and products named and recommended inside AI-generated answers.
They build on each other. Good AEO content usually ranks well and gets cited by AI tools too.
How to optimize for answer engines
1. Start with the real questions
Collect the questions buyers actually ask: from "People also ask" boxes, customer emails, reviews, Amazon Q&A and your sales calls. "Is magnesium glycinate good for sleep?" is a better target than "magnesium supplement".
2. Answer first, in 40 to 60 words
Put a direct answer right under the question, then expand. Answer engines favor a short, complete answer they can quote without editing.
3. Use the question as a heading
Phrase H2 and H3 headings the way people ask, like "How long does shipping take?", so engines can match the question to your answer.
4. Use lists, steps and tables
Steps, comparisons and specs are easier to extract when they're formatted as numbered lists or tables instead of long paragraphs.
5. Add FAQ and HowTo structured data
Schema markup tells engines exactly where the question and answer are. It's one of the simplest technical wins in AEO.
6. Show you know the subject
Answers from named experts with real experience, original data and up-to-date facts are more likely to be trusted and cited. Add author bios and update key pages regularly.
AEO for ecommerce brands
For online stores, AEO isn't only for blog posts. Shopping assistants such as Alexa for Shopping on Amazon, and AI shopping in ChatGPT, answer questions like "is this safe for kids?" or "does this fit a queen bed?" from your product content. Give them clear answers:
- A "who it's for" line on every product page
- A how-to-use section in plain steps
- Product FAQs that address the top objections from your reviews
- Comparison pages for "X vs Y" questions buyers search
Quick AEO checklist
- List your top 20 customer questions.
- Answer each one in 40 to 60 words, under a question heading.
- Add FAQ schema to those pages.
- Format steps and comparisons as lists or tables.
- Add an author bio and a last-updated date.
- Check monthly whether you're quoted in snippets and AI answers.
